Lebanon-Israel Border: IDF Evacuation Orders Trigger Mass Displacement as Cross-Border Strikes Intensify — Media Hook

e Bekaa Valley on Thursday ordering the evacuation of at least 23 villages, as the most intense exchange of fire along the Israel-Lebanon border in months sent civilians fleeing inland for the second time this year.
The IDF said its forces struck what it described as Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and observation posts near the border towns of Ayta al-Jabal, Rashaf, and Tayr Harfa. Lebanon’s State News Agency reported Israeli artillery fire across at least a dozen border villages. The Lebanese Health Ministry said at least seven people were wounded in the strikes, including two medics.
Hezbollah responded with a volley of Katyusha rockets and drone strikes targeting Israeli military positions in Kiryat Shmona and near the Shebaa Farms area. The Iran-backed group said the strikes were in “direct response” to Israeli operations in Gaza and Syria.
UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, said it was “closely monitoring the situation” and called on both sides to exercise maximum restraint. France and the United States issued urgent statements urging de-escalation, with US Secretary of State Blinken speaking directly with Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
The crossings came after a 72-hour period in which UNIFIL recorded 87 separate violations of the understandings that have largely held the Israel-Lebanon border in a fragile ceasefire since November 2022. The violations — primarily Israeli overflights eplace it. The Brussels-mediated framework for long-term border normalization remains stalled.
The Kataeb Party, Lebanon’s oldest Maronite political formation, said it had contacted the Lebanese Army command and requested the deployment of additional troops to the border region. A statement from the party called the Israeli evacuation orders “a deliberate attempt to empty southern Lebanon of its civilian population as a precursor to permanent territorial seizure.”
Meanwhile, the World Food Programme said it had suspended operations in several villages in the Tyre and Bint Jbeil districts due to the security deterioration, leaving an estimated 12,000 civilians without regular food assistance.
The Shebaa Farms — a small disputed territory currently controlled mediation efforts to date.
The UN Security Council is expected to hold closed consultations on the border situation on Friday at the request of France. Senior US officials said a de-escalation framework was under active discussion but warned that military momentum on the ground was outpacing diplomatic efforts.
The Israel-Lebanon border has held in relative calm since the November 2022 ceasefire brokered by Washington and Paris, but the understanding has always been seen as a temporary arrangement rather than a substitute for a formal peace treaty. Analysts have long warned that the absence of a political track would eventually erode the military one.
