Haiti Gang Offensive Leaves 89 Dead in Deadliest Weekend Since 2021; State Authority Collapses

PORT-AU-PRINCE — A coordinated gang offensive across five districts of the Haitian capital left at least 89 people dead over the weekend, according to the UN, making it the deadliest single weekend of violence since President Jovenel Moise’s assassination in 2021. The attacks targeted police stations, a municipal court and the main public hospital in Cite Soleil.

The Viv Ansanm gang confederation claimed responsibility, saying it was a response to the Kenyan-led multinational security mission’s resumed operations. Prime Minister Garry Conille declared a 30-day state of emergency and imposed a nighttime curfew, but officials acknowledged that state authority in large swaths of the capital has effectively collapsed. At least 12 police officers were killed and three police stations overrun.
