EL CUSCO — Peru’s presidential runoff campaign descended into open confrontation Saturday after the national electoral jury rejected an emergency petition by Keiko Fujimori’s campaign to disqualify her rival Rafael Lopez Aliaga over an unresolved 2015 tax fraud case. The jury’s 4-1 ruling allows Lopez Aliaga to remain on the June 15 ballot, with polls showing a margin-of-error race within three points.
Fujimori accused the jury of “acting under political pressure” and called on supporters to march on the national electoral office in Lima on Monday. Peru’s military high command issued a rare statement warning that “the armed forces will not accept any outcome that lacks constitutional legitimacy.”
