SANTO DOMINGO — The Dominican Republic’s health ministry issued a nationwide epidemiological alert Saturday following the detection of three Oropouche fever cases in Puerto Plata alongside four suspected Ebola cases among travelers returning from Kinshasa. The alert activates enhanced screening at all airports and ports and authorizes closure of schools in three municipalities.
The Oropouche outbreak has infected at least 89 people in Puerto Plata over two weeks, overwhelming local hospital capacity. The four suspected Ebola patients are in isolation at the Jose Francisco Pena Gomez hospital in the capital, with CDC test results expected within 72 hours. President Luis Abinader convened an emergency session of the national health council.
