TEHRAN/JERUSALEM — Iran fired a barrage of ballistic missiles at Israel on Sunday night, hours after Israel launched a major strike on Hezbollah’s stronghold in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district, killing at least two people and wounding 20. The exchange represents the most significant cross-border military escalation since the ceasefire framework collapsed last week.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the missile launch in a statement, saying it was “a firm and proportionate response” to what it called Israel’s “criminal aggression” in Beirut. The IRGC said the strikes targeted “military and strategic positions” in Israel. Israel’s IDF confirmed the attack and said its Iron Dome defense system had intercepted “the majority” of incoming projectiles. No Israeli casualties have been confirmed.
“This is a firm and proportionate response to the criminal aggression against our allies in Beirut. The Zionist regime will bear the consequences of its actions.” — IRGC statement
The attack comes as the US-Iran military confrontation enters its 101st day. US Central Command said American forces stationed in the region were on heightened alert but were not targeted. President Trump, speaking from Washington, urged “maximum restraint from all parties” and said his administration was in “constant contact” with both Tel Aviv and Gulf allies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened an emergency cabinet meeting late Sunday. His office said Israel “will respond in full force at a time and place of our choosing.” Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel’s response would be “devastating and decisive.”
In Beirut, the IDF confirmed it had struck Hezbollah’s central command headquarters in the Dahiyeh district of the capital’s southern suburbs, calling it a “targeted operation against a senior leadership facility.” Lebanese state media said multiple explosions were heard across the capital. Hezbollah has not yet issued a formal statement.
Simultaneously, at least 13 people were killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza near Khan Younis, Gaza City, and Deir el-Balah as Egypt hosted a new round of ceasefire talks with Hamas and Palestinian factions on Sunday.
France is pushing for coordinated European sanctions on Israel over violence in the occupied West Bank. The US has introduced a draft resolution at the IAEA demanding Iran open its bombed nuclear sites to inspectors and account for its uranium stockpile.
The White House said Trump will not unfreeze Iranian assets before a comprehensive ceasefire deal is reached. Iranian officials have said the release of frozen funds would build the “trust necessary” for a lasting agreement.
