MEXICO CITY — Mexico imposed 25% retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods Wednesday, escalating a trade standoff triggered when Trump announced sweeping new duties on Mexican imports over fentanyl trafficking and migration. Mexico’s president called the U.S. duties “an act of aggression.”
The Mexican tariffs target agricultural products, machinery, and chemicals from states most dependent on trade with Mexico. American farm groups warned the duties could cost the sector $4 billion annually.
Negotiations between the two governments collapsed Tuesday night after Mexican officials refused U.S. demands to deploy troops along the southern border. A Mexican official said Washington threatened additional sanctions if Mexico did not comply.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce called for emergency talks. Mexico’s economy minister said the country will not accept “ultimatums” and is seeking allies in Canada and the European Union to challenge the U.S. duties at the World Trade Organization.
