1. China Blocks Pentagon Visit Over $14B Taiwan Arms Package

China has refused to approve a planned visit by U.S. Under Secretary of Defence Elbridge Colby until the Trump administration decides whether to proceed with a $14 billion weapons package for Taiwan, including Patriot missiles and NASAMS air-defence systems. The diplomatic snub escalates tensions between Washington and Beijing just weeks after the two sides resumed trade talks. China views the arms sale as a direct violation of its sovereignty claims over the island democracy. The State Department has not yet formally approved or rejected the package.

2. Iran Establishes ‘Controlled Maritime Zone’ in Strait of Hormuz

Iran announced the establishment of a “controlled maritime zone” in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping chokepoints. Tehran said the zone will require vessels to submit to inspections and routing protocols, raising immediate alarm among Gulf allies and oil markets. The U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet called the declaration “illegal and destabilising.” Global oil prices jumped more than 3% in early trading on fears of supply disruption through a corridor that handles roughly 20% of the world’s oil shipments.

3. Trump Admin Blocks Refugee Resettlement — Except for White South Africans

The Trump administration announced a sweeping pause on refugee resettlement programmes, effective immediately, with a narrow carve-out allowing priority processing for white South Africans seeking to flee post-apartheid economic conditions. Humanitarian groups condemned the policy as “clear racism,” noting that the carve-out explicitly targets applicants by race and national origin — a legal and ethical first in U.S. immigration history. A federal judge in San Francisco issued a temporary restraining order blocking the carve-out within hours of the announcement.

4. G7 Finalises $50 Billion Ukraine Loan Backed by Frozen Russian Assets

G7 leaders finalised details of a landmark $50 billion loan programme for Ukraine, backed by interest earned on roughly $300 billion in frozen Russian sovereign assets held in Western banks. The deal, months in negotiation, will provide Kyiv with immediate budget support without requiring additional direct contributions from Western taxpayers. Russian officials called the arrangement “theft” and threatened retaliation against G7 financial institutions. Disbursement is expected to begin by July.

5. Nipah Virus Outbreak in India Prompts WHO Monitoring

India’s Kerala state is battling a fresh Nipah virus outbreak that has killed two people and hospitalised at least 14 more since mid-May. The WHO has placed the outbreak under active monitoring and issued travel advisory for the affected Kozhikode district, a known Nipah hotspot. Health workers have begun contact-tracing and imposed containment protocols. Nipah, a bat-borne virus with a mortality rate up to 75%, has no approved vaccine and has flared sporadically in India since its first recorded appearance in 1998.
