TEHRAN — Iranian military forces have seized a Honduras-flagged vessel operating as a “floating armoury” in the Gulf of Oman, according to a maritime risk management firm and confirmed ship-tracking data, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through international shipping lanes.

The vessel, identified as the Hui Chuan, was intercepted by Iranian personnel and is now bound for Iranian territorial waters, the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported. BBC Verify has cross-referenced ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic which shows the 57-meter vessel last broadcast its position approximately 70 kilometers north-east of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

The operators of the Hui Chuan confirmed to maritime security firm Vanguard that the vessel was functioning as a floating armoury — a vessel that stores weapons and ammunition for private security contractors who protect commercial ships against pirate attacks in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Gulf of Oman. BBC Verify said it could not independently confirm the cargo aboard the ship at the time of seizure.

The incident comes amid heightened regional instability following Wednesday’s attack on the Indian-flagged vessel Haji Ali, which reportedly sank off the coast of Oman after a suspected drone or missile strike. All 14 crew members were rescued by Omani Coast Guard units and transferred to Diba Port, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said, calling the attack “unacceptable.”

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, has become a flashpoint in recent geopolitical tensions. The situation was addressed during talks Thursday between President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing. The White House said Xi “made clear China’s opposition to the militarization of the Strait” and both sides agreed that the waterway must remain open to ensure the free flow of energy.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has not issued a public statement regarding the seizure. The incident is likely to draw scrutiny from Western governments concerned about escalating Iranian maritime activity in one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints.

The Hui Chuan had spent the past month operating off the north-eastern coasts of Oman and the UAE before being intercepted, according to MarineTraffic tracking data reviewed by BBC Verify.
