New York Knicks Hold Home Court Edge as Eastern Conference Finals Shifts to Cleveland

New York Knicks vs Cleveland Cavaliers

The New York Knicks returned home with momentum firmly in hand, having seized a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Cleveland Cavaliers after back-to-back victories at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 38 points in Game 1 and followed with a 26-point performance in Game 2, as New York defeated Cleveland 115-104 in the series opener on May 19, then posted a 109-93 victory on May 21 to take a stranglehold on the Eastern Conference Finals.

The series now shifts to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Saturday, May 23, where the Knicks will look to extend their lead to 3-0 before heading back to Cleveland for what could be a series-ending Game 4 on May 25. New York’s success on the road to open the series represents a remarkable shift from recent Knicks playoff history, a franchise that had not won a playoff series in over a decade before this run.

Karl-Anthony Towns emerged as a difference-maker in Game 2, grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds while contributing 26 points alongside Brunson. The Knicks’ balanced attack — five players scored in double figures in Game 1 — has made New York difficult to defend, as opposing defenses cannot collapse exclusively on Brunson without leaving other Knicks open on the perimeter or in the post.

Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers in scoring across both games, but Cleveland’s supporting cast failed to provide the secondary production the team needed. The Cavs’ offense, which ranked among the NBA’s best during the regular season, has been bogged down by Knicks defense that has consistently forced difficult shots and limited transition opportunities. Jarrett Allen’s presence in the paint has been a bright spot for Cleveland, though it has not been enough to counter New York’s offensive efficiency.

The Knicks have not reached the NBA Finals since 1999, and this current roster — anchored by Brunson’s clutch scoring and a collection of versatile two-way players — is making a compelling case that that drought could end in 2026. The upcoming home stand at Madison Square Garden represents the biggest basketball moments the venue has hosted in more than a quarter-century, and the atmosphere heading into Game 3 is expected to be electric.

Game 3 is scheduled for Saturday, May 23 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Tip-off is at 8:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast nationally. The Knicks will aim to take a 3-0 series lead before the schedule returns to Cleveland for Game 4 on May 25.
