Russia Strikes Six Ukrainian Regions in 24 Hours, Killing at Least 15

Latest Wave of Strikes Kills at Least 15 Across Ukraine

Russian forces launched a fresh wave of attacks across Ukraine on Monday, June 29, killing at least 15 people and injuring 118 others over a 24-hour period, regional authorities reported. The strikes hit civilian infrastructure in multiple cities and oblasts, stretching from the eastern front lines to the northern border regions, in what officials described as one of the most intensive single-day barrages in recent weeks.

The most lethal single attack struck the central-eastern city of Dnipro on Monday morning, killing at least five people and injuring 28, of whom four are in critical condition, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said. The weapon used has not yet been officially identified. The city sits more than 100 kilometers from the front line, underscoring the extended reach of Russia’s long-range strike capability. Rescue workers searched the rubble through the morning.

Strikes Hit Six Regions in a Single Day

Russian attacks targeted at least six Ukrainian oblasts over the same 24-hour window. In southeastern Zaporizhzhia Oblast, six people were killed and 34 wounded, including in a morning attack on a minibus that left two dead and six injured, among them a child, Governor Ivan Fedorov said. In northeastern Kharkiv Oblast, two people were killed and 25 wounded, including a 10-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported. Sumy Oblast in the north recorded at least two dead and nine wounded. Donetsk Oblast reported seven wounded, and Kherson Oblast in the south reported 14 wounded from separate attacks. In Chernihiv Oblast, a Russian drone struck a gas station, injuring one worker.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched 108 drones against the country overnight, of which 82 were intercepted or suppressed. The strikes came as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks and reiterated calls for Western allies to accelerate deliveries of air defense systems, including Patriot missile batteries. Zelensky’s office said the assault demonstrated Russia’s strategy of targeting civilian infrastructure to sap civilian morale and drain air defense resources.

“Once again, Putin and his madness have claimed victory over the lives of ordinary children, residential buildings, and a clinic,” Zelensky wrote on social media, referring to strikes that damaged four medical facilities in Kyiv during a previous large-scale barrage earlier this month.

Ukraine Reveals Scale of North Korean Casualties in Kursk Fight

Separately on Monday, Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate (HUR) claimed that North Korean troops fighting alongside Russian forces in Russia’s Kursk Oblast sustained more than 7,000 casualties during the months-long campaign to push back a Ukrainian cross-border incursion. The figure, which The Kyiv Independent was unable to independently verify, surpasses previous estimates by South Korean and British intelligence, which had put total North Korean casualties at around 6,000. Ukrainian soldiers who fought in Kursk told The Kyiv Independent that North Korean troops, while initially unprepared for modern drone warfare, adapted quickly and showed considerable discipline. The claims came as Ukraine pressed allied governments to acknowledge the presence of foreign troops on Russian soil as a factor in any diplomatic calculations.

Ukraine Presses Back While Calling for Air Defense Aid

Despite the pressure on its cities, Ukraine has continued offensive operations. Military officials said Ukrainian forces carried out strikes on Russian bridges, command posts, and logistics nodes, aiming to disrupt the supply chains that sustain Moscow’s barrages. The Kyiv Independent also reported that Ukraine’s 154th Mechanized Brigade commander was found dead, with the military citing combat circumstances. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russian President Vladimir Putin “is a war criminal and loser who has no cards except terror,” urging partners to unlock funding for NATO’s PURL weapons procurement program and expand sanctions on Moscow.

“Peace efforts will only succeed when they are backed with real pressure on Moscow,” Sybiha wrote. The minister called on Ukraine’s allies to increase investment in Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities and advance EU membership negotiations as part of a broader strategy to degrade Russia’s ability to sustain the war. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces achieved all designated targets during a recent nationwide barrage, including strikes on military-industrial facilities, fuel depots, and transport infrastructure across the Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Khmelnytskyi, and Sumy regions.

Talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives have not resumed. Western officials have held parallel diplomatic tracks involving Iran and Gulf states in recent weeks, but no agreement addressing the Ukraine conflict directly has been announced. Analysts warn that Russia’s strike tempo suggests Moscow has no intention of reducing hostilities while negotiations on other flashpoints remain ongoing, and that air defense gaps on Ukraine’s eastern flank remain a critical vulnerability with no immediate solution in sight.
